This cache is placed near the historical 1890 Portal School in Papillion. Bring your own pen / pencil. The hide is a redux placement for the archived cache "Hatchet House" (GC12XFB) and has a historical relationship to my "Portal Ridge" (GC1XWNG) hide. As with any cache, please use stealth to conceal the cache from muggles and re-hide the container where you found it.
A BIT OF HISTORY:
Built in 1890, this one-room schoolhouse was constructed south of the township of Portal, Nebraska, in Sarpy County. The town of Portal was abandoned in the early 1900's due to frequent flooding. Most of its residents moved to nearby Papillion. The Portal School was still utilized for many years and was the last rural eight-grade school to close its doors in Sarpy County. In 1995 the old school building was moved from 114th and Giles to 242 North Jefferson Street in Papillion and placed next to the historic Sautter House.
The John Sautter Farmhouse is a distinctly German structure. The dwelling, of nogged-frame construction, was built in the late 1860s by John Sautter, Sr., a native of Wurttemberg, Germany. Sautter operated a grist mill for a number of years and served as one of the founders of the First Lutheran Church of Papillion. The Sautter House stood originally on a farm located just north of the present city limits of Papillion. In the 1970s housing developments destroyed the original farm setting. The house was moved in 1979, saving it from demolition.
Both buildings are owned and maintained by the Papillion Area Historical Society.
