Geocache Description:

This geocache takes you to a Monroe County park with access to, and spectacular views of, Irondequoit Bay.

This cache is placed as part of the Great Lakes Seaway Trail Geotrail, located within the Central Lake Ontario (CLO) Region. There are 15 caches hidden within this region, and geocachers finding ten or more Great Lakes Seaway Trail Geotrail caches within this region can earn a free Central Lake Ontario Region geocoin. If you are interested in participating in the Geotrail, please visit the geotrail website for a list of locations where you can pick up a free copy of the official Great Lakes Seaway Trail Geotrail Logbook.

This cache contains a unique hole punch which must stay with the cache. Use this hole punch in space #11 on the Central Lake Ontario Region page of your Official Great Lakes Seaway Trail Logbook. This hole punch is NOT a trade item.

One of the spectacular features of the Central Lake Ontario Region is Irondequoit Bay. The bay was created by glacial activity about 12000 years ago. Lucky for us, we were left with a body of water now used by many for recreation. There are a couple places off Empire Boulevard that rent boats that can be used on the bay. It is quite possible to approach the park containing this geocache, Abraham Lincoln Park, by water. (NOTE: This park used to be called Irondequoit Bay Park East.)

In addition to various types of boating on the actual bay, the area has a few great parks such as Abraham Lincoln Park where this cache is placed. This park has nesting bald eagles in its south end - maybe you'll be fortunate enough to see the majestic parents in flight while searching for this cache! Many other types of birds including Canada goose, mute swan, wood duck, great blue heron, belted kingfisher and mallard can be found here.

In addition to boating and birdwatching the area offers great hiking opportunities. For instance, the trails at Abraham Lincoln Park offer challenging but rewarding hiking. After finding this geocache, be sure to continue on to the west to get some views of Irondequoit Bay!

Note the terrain rating for this cache! If you are not interested in this type of terrain, please find another cache to do!

How you get to the cache is up to you. We suggest parking at the Bay Park lot off of Empire Blvd, location N43 11.277 W77 30.672. Be advised that going past the gate is allowed, but the Penfield Public Works Department closes the gate at 4pm (possibly much earlier on the weekend) , and they don't care about your car. So, be wary about going past the gate. Note this will be a long hilly hike from this parking area. But we geocache for exercise, imagine that!

Note, This is the park formerly known as Irondequoit Bay Park East.
