Geocache Description:

Explore a fascinating site with lots of archeological surprises. The Berfillia hill just at the current western outskirts of the city of Modiin. On top of the hill you will see caves, remains of wine press sites carved in the rock, anceint water holes and a nice 360 degree view of Modiin and the hazy coast line. Naturally, the cache resides there as well.

The name Berfillia is a twist of the name Porfiria which was a location for the Purple colour industry in the crusader period.

Modiin is surrounded by many such interesting hills and from time to time the residents need to go out and struggle for preserving those sites from the accelerated construction. Bring a flashlight for explorations.

You can reach by car easily to a location which is 5 minute walk to the cache. If you are coming from Modiin go to the Kaizer neighbourhood (Avnei Chen). Go down on the main avenue – Emek Zvulun. Just at the end of the houses when the avenue ends, turn left, cross the intersection and park on the right. The hill is just on your right now.

Coming out of Modiin on 443 road take the first light right, just before the city, to the industrial area towards Ligad center. Keep straight until the traffic circle and take the first exit to the right. Drive straight until the road ends, and take the left turn. Drive up the road until it makes you turn right where the avenue starts. Do not go back to the avenue on the left but park your car on the right.

The area is currently under new road construction so it might be that when it ends you will need to find a better place to leave your car, just near by.

There is a collection of very clear unmarked hiking trails around the hill, mostly used for cycling. They start right were the car is parked. Just cross the remains of the fence and you will quickly see one. No need to walk on the road. The easiest way is to climb the hill from the east. For that take the first trail to the south. It climbs comfortably for about 100m. Now if you look to the west towards the hill you will see a large Carob tree in the distance. Find the path that leads towards the tree. It climbs quickly and easily to the top of the Berfillia hill. You can enjoy the fruits of the tree if you find some.

On the hill you can explore the surrounding. Watch out from dangerous holes. Not everything is covered. There is a nice opening of what looks like a large water hole. There are several fruit trees around. Look for the small Pomegranate tree. We found it full of fruit which in a month or so might be ready to eat. Just at the foot of the tree is a small opening of a very nice and surprising cave. If you brought a flashlight you might want to explore it carefully. You can see there big trees roots carving through the ground in search of water.
