The Curse of the Were Ferret Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

RedFerret: After reports of the trail fading, I made an unplanned visit to the dark woodland home of these vile creatures tonight, hoping to find evidence of their continued presence, or the joyous news that they had departed.

Starting out at the beginning of the old trail, I knew where the first mark should be, but could I find it [?]

After changing the batteries on my torch, I realised just how dim the light had been, and just how bright my headtorch really was - and managed to find the first mark. It had faded but, yep, it was still there.

However, that was the only mark I could find, the undergrowth around here has increased a lot - and might be hiding some of the remaining marks, but I suspect they have faded or gone.

Not to be put off, and with an old memory of where the lair itself should be, I marched confidently off into the undergrowth to check on the nest itself, but after a good search, could not find it. Or any evidence it had ever been - hmmm.

Heading back, I soon ran into a problem - I couldn't find the path (Or the way out). The undergrowth was providing some large spikey natural barriers, and my normal sense of direction was gone. Added to this, the light from my torch was disturbing the local wildlife, which was scattering through the tree's with bangs, snaps and crackles - all very unnerving!!!

Finally, after some panic, I found the path, and my way out.

After some reflection, and a strong cup of coffee, I feel that the Were-Ferret's have finally gone, their dark shadow has now lifted, and it's safe to return to the woods. For now. With that in mind, I am shutting down this watch-page, and notifying all Were-Ferret hunters to stand down, but maintain eternal vigilance in the future - we must not be unprepared for their return.

A big thanks to all who have hunted / attempted to hunt for this elusive beast.

Geocache Description:

A night cache in darkest Warrington.

I first discovered the creature to the east of the town, after reading about ?'s quest. Although others have attempted to eradicate this nest, I was more concerned with a discovery closer to home. In spite of the Herculean efforts of these brave hunters, what if any of the beasts had escaped?

Following the instructions on ?'s Journal (from the ill-fated expidition to the previous Lair), I knew what equipment to use to track the Were-Ferret, and had been keeping watch on other woodland area's. I could find nothing amiss, until last night, whilst walking along the eaves of an ancient patch of woodland, the unmistakable mark of the Were-Ferret was visible leading off into the undergrowth. I followed it as far as I could, and am certain I caught sight of a new nest.

I intend to follow the trail again tonight, but in case I do not return, I leave a record here, as the Ill-fated ? did.

The trail starts at the listed co-ordinates, a narrow path which winds its way into the woodland. Just inside, the Were-Ferrets "stain" becomes visible, all above head height (When holding the equipment at eye level!). I include here a description of my first journey to the new nest.

Mark 1 = On a tree to the LEFT of the path

Mark 2 = On a tree to the RIGHT of the path

Mark 3 = On a tree to the RIGHT of the path

Mark 4 = On a tree to the LEFT of the path

Mark 5 = On a tree to the RIGHT of the path

At the 5th Mark, The Were-Ferret trail takes a sharp, 90 degree turn TO YOUR RIGHT into the undergrowth (LEAVE THE PATH AT THIS TREE)

If you reach a tree trunk, leaning over the path from the right, you have gone too far, and missed the 5th Mark

Mark 6 = A little distance into the undergrowth. Keep to the LEFT of this tree, then about 6 feet after it, turn approx 45 degrees to your RIGHT, and continue until you see the next Mark.

Mark 7 = On a tree. Walk to the RIGHT of this tree, and continue into the undergrowth to the NORTH - you may need to change your course a few degrees to the RIGHT here

Mark 8 = On a tree (Where else). At this point, take a 90 degree turn to your RIGHT (Due EAST), and continue into the undergrowth

Mark 9 = A DOUBLE MARK (Two Markers A Few Inches Apart). You have reached the new nest, in the middle of a triple trunked tree

As with the previous hunt, you would be wise not to search alone, and it may help if you leave photgraphic evidence of your identity here, to help when searching for you when if you don't return. Please let me know if any of the Marks have vanished, and I will investigate further.

In the summer, this trail will take you through nettles and thorns, so please take care. In the winter, the ground may be quite wet. Please prepare accordingly.
