The mountain was named by
Captain James Cook in October 1769 after Sergeant Edgecombe who was
the sergeant of marines on his vessel, the Endeavour. The mountain
rises to 821 m above sea level, and is visible from the waters of
the bay, 30 km to the north
A permit is required for
walking access, and can be obtained from Maori Investments Ltd,
Waterhouse St Kawerau 07 323 8146 between Monday to Friday. Permits
are $5.00
Access may be limited during the fire season
The additional WP's are for
locating the 4WD track for walking access on the eastern side of
the mountain, which is off McKee Rd. Use of the forestry road is
covered by the permit. There is a locked gate further up the hill,
so dont drive further up than the parking area.
The start of the 4WD track and parking area are listed as WP2 and
WP3
Once you have reached the top, the walking track to the western
ridge and the cache location can be found using WP4. No bush
bashing is required. There are tracks right up to the cache.
Take the time to check out the lake, and also the walk up to the
trig, which is located on the eastern ridge
Allow about 1 to1.5 hours to
get to the top. This is not your average urban cache, so go
prepared.
