Geocache Description:

CURRUMBIN ROCK

A national environmental sanctuary dedicated for the purpose of the study of geology and marine biology by school children and other interested students.

Currumbin rock has been formed in geologically recent times by wave erosion of the basement rock formation, which is composed of mudstone, shale and shilstone. These rocks were deposited as marine sediments in the devonian or carboniferous periods, 400300 million years ago, and were then strongly compressed and the layers folded. Originally layering has been obliterated and the structure now seen dipping inland is cleavage, rather than bedding. Some parts of the rock outcrops have been impregnated and hardened with iron solutions and silica and the weaker areas show numerous small cavities. This is called honeycomb weathering. The large blocks of basalt between the road and Currumbin Rock have been obtained from Terranora. They come from a lava flow tertiary age about, 20 million years old, like the basalt on the highest part of Currumbin Headland near the Baptist Church camp.
