A walk of about 1 hour, including stiles and uneven ground in the
final part. It is possible though to obtain all of the clues
sitting in the comfort of your car, except for the final stage, and
be done in 15 minutes! Gruffy Ground is
the local name for a patch of land covered in holes where open-cast
mining took place. By the end of the 19th century all the seams had
been worked out. The area is uneven, but safe to walk
upon.
The village of Shipham is largely a commuter village. Situated on
the western edge of the beautiful Mendip Hills in Somerset, the
pretty, unspoilt village of Shipham is close to the A38 and some 15
miles south of Bristol.
Shipham Hill is one of the highest points in the Mendip Hills. It
offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, the Bristol
Channel and Weston-super-Mare.
St Leonard's church at Shipham dates back to the 19th century and
has a stained glass window dedicated to Hannah More.
In the Domesday Book of 1086 the village is listed as Sipeham,
meaning 'sheep home'. In the 18th and 19th century the rich zinc
and lead deposits in the area were mined. Explorers and cavers
still visit the Singing River Mine at Shipham. Another attraction
in the area is the Mendip Raceway, which is famous for its Stock
Car Racing. Thanks to original cachers, Sandford Sallies, who brought the area to our
attention.
