OCBSA Cache to Eagle #5 (Oak Cyn) Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

LavaLizard: As there's been no cache to find for months, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace the cache sometime in the future, just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it.

Geocache Description:

Cache is not at the posted coordinates, but you do need to go there. Cache is located at N 33° 50.north W 117° 45.west. Read on to learn how to determine the values of "north" and "west.".

Cache to Eagle is a series of public geocaches hidden at or near the sites of Boy Scout Eagle projects. Reaching the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America requires years of dedication and hard work. In addition to required merit badges, active troop participation and leadership, each Scout must complete a project that requires many hours of planning, leadership, and a commitment to his community. This cache is part of a nationwide geocaching series called Cache to Eagle, which showcases these special contributions. These caches were placed in 2010 as part of the “100 Years of Scouting” celebration.

The logbook at each cache location has one of the 12 points of the Boy Scout Law (in random order). This cache series had multiple purposes:
  • Celebrate 100 Years of Scouting by highlighting the contributions Eagle Scouts have made to our community
  • Introduce Scouters to Geocaching and Geocachers to Scouting
  • Provide a means to distribute geocoins and patches donated by the Orange County Council of the BSA

We distributed the geocoins and patches, but the other objectives remain.
These collectibles may still be available at www.geoscouting.com.

Many local Eagle candidates chose the Oak Canyon Nature Center as their beneficiary. A good deal of the fencing and seating throughout the Nature Center was built as part of the Eagle Candidates' advancement requirement.

from the City of Anaheim website:
Oak Canyon Nature Center is a 58-acre natural park nestled in the Anaheim Hills. A year-round stream meanders through the park. Consisting of three adjoining canyons, four miles of hiking trails traverse one of the few remaining areas of oak woodland and coastal sage scrub in our region. Native wildlife makes the canyon their home and is just waiting to be discovered. Also located on site is the John J. Collier Interpretive Center, a small museum with live animal and regional natural history exhibits.

The Nature Center is ideal for those who are just stepping into the wilderness for the first time or for those more experienced trekkers who are seeking a short hike.

The Oak Canyon Nature Center has established operational guidelines which are designed to promote the conservation of the Nature Center's wildlife resources, as well as for the benefit and protection of park visitors. The guidelines include:

  • No pets or horses allowed on grounds
  • No picknicking allowed on grounds
  • No collecting of natural objects
  • No amplified music
  • No bicycles or skateboards
  • No hiking off of trails

Individuals and families are welcome to hike the various trails throughout the Nature Center seven days a week. Trails and parking area gate close at 5 pm. The Interpretive Center is open Saturdays 10am - 4pm.

Finding the cache:

The posted waypoint takes you to one of the notable Eagle Service projects within the Nature Center. There is a plaque with information about the project.

"North" is calculated by subtracting the troop number from 1,008. "West" is 207 + the month on the plaque. Take time to enjoy the nature center and visit the sites referenced below. Please follow the park guidelines. Beware of poison oak which is native to the area, and stay on the trail.

Original contents include: log book with "secret" word, pen, 2AA batteries (be prepared), hand sanitizer and leather lacing.
