A bubbling Artesian Well
An artesian well is one in which water rises under its own pressure without pumping. If the pressure is great enough, the water will rise all the way to the surface and flow freely from the well. The name "artesian" is derived from Artois, France, where many artesian wells were drilled by Carthusian monks as early as 1126.
This Artesian well originally served a mining company almost 100 years ago. Now it feeds a nearby protected wetland. Please park only in the designated area (see parking coordinates below). It's an easy 3/4 mile stroll through Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve- one of Birmingham's best-kept secrets!
This cache is placed with permission of Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve Management.
