Geocache Description:

This cache starts at the Memorial to Sergeant Samuel Pearse.
Unit. 45th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers, Sadlier-Jackson’s Brigade.
He is honoured for winning the Victoria Cross for bravery during action in Russia in the First World War.

There is no doubt Sam was a remarkable young man. Only 16 years of age when the war broke out in Europe and 17 when he enlisted in 1915, Sam’s first action was at Gallipoli and then he was stationed in Egypt for a period before being shipped to northern France.
It was in a little known campaign in Russia in 1918 that Sam won the VC. The allied troops sent a contingent of 30,000 troops to the seaports of Murmansk and Archangel, to protect the region from German occupation and becoming a German submarine base, which would have had dire consequences for Allied supply ships. These troops were not expected to fight.

On 29th August during at attack on an enemy battery position north of Emtsa, Pearse, under heavy enemy fire, cut his way through barbed wire thus clearing a way for troops to enter. Enemy fire from a blockhouse was causing casualties so Pearse charged single-handed, killing the occupants with bombs. He was killed by machine-gun fire several minutes later.

Local artist, Jim Curry created and installed the Statue for the Mildura RSL club. The Dedication of the WW1 Honour Roll and Samuel Pearse’s Statue was held on Remembrance Day 2009. It was a memorable occasion for all those who attended and in particular Samuel’s 90 year old daughter who unveiled the Statue. Although it was an extremely hot day the service was well attended.
