Night Moves Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

bretina: With a heavy heart, we have decided to archive this cache. The area is fabulous and it's been a lot of fun to go out and walk the trails at night.

We've had some wonderful life-changes for us in the last year and a half (hello gcLiam & gcBrady!), but we now just don't have enough time to maintain some of our caches now.

This is the furthest of our caches from home, and also has required the most maintenance for us. With the container being muggled, and the final location being compromised (identifying cards left there) we didn't have faith that it would not be muggled again.

It's a great area for a night cache, and hopefully someone else can find something to do in there.

Thanks to all who visited.

"...Strange how the night moves" - Bob Seger

This is a nighttime cache located at the Brower Lake Nature Preserve (east of Rockford). Do not attempt this cache during the day. Not only will you have trouble seeing the fireflys, but the spirit of this cache is as a nighttime experience.

The cache coordinates will take you to the trailhead leading into the forest. This is in a highly residential area, please respect their privacy and watch the noise level near these year-round cottages/homes on the lake. From the trailhead, proceed down the path marked by the tree limbs on each side of the path. Soon you should be in the forest with nothing but the night to surround you. Once in the forest take the trail leading to your left (you should see firetacks to guide you that way). Do not go up the large hill near the start of the forest, if you do you are going the wrong way.

To find this cache, you will need a flashlight. In fact bring a second flashlight. One to look at the trail and the other to shine at the trees to spot firefly reflectors. Headlamps work very well on this kind of cache. Spare batteries and bug spray are also recommended. Night caches are not for everyone as they require additional levels of equipment and draw on a different skillset to solve and find then your normal caches.

You will walk along the trail shining your light forward and looking for small 'firefly' markers on the trees. These fireflys will point you on the proper path towards your goal.

Walk down the trail following the individual firefly markers until you see a series of four fireflys on the same tree. Only one tree should have more then one firefly on it, and this is your signal to leave the trail and walk into the woods in the direction of the fireflys. Should you miss the multiple fireflys for the cache on the way in, you may find yourself walking in circles back to the trailhead area!

You should find the cache about ten feet or so off the trail. The cache is an Ammo Canister with the standard geocaching markings on it. There is a very small reflector on the handle to help you find it. At the time of placement it was filled with several glow sticks/wristbands you are free to take to have fun with while hiking back to the trailhead. Please do not leave any replacement swag, we want it to stay night-themed.

After finding the cache proceed back out to the trail and continue along the path. There will be additional fireflys to navigate you back to the trailhead. The cache is placed a slight bit more than half way around the loop, so there is no advantage to reversing your route to get back to the beginning.

You should not attempt this cache alone. The trail has some steep hills, numerous leaves on the ground, rocks and ruts to watch out for. Additionally, there are several areas in which you may have to duck to avoid hitting your head on leaning trees. For these reasons, Hiking poles are very helpful while walking the trails. Keep in mind you are in a Michigan Forest at night. Who knows what moves in the night!
