Oregon Trail Series: Rocky
Road
Thousands of emigrants
crossed
southwestern Idaho between 1843 and 1870
on their way to the Willamette River valley in Oregon.
A rocky section of the Oregon
Trail can be found to the south of Immigrant Road. The portion of
the trail east of Canyon Creek was noted in many diaries as some of
the roughest trail that the emigrants had encountered. This section
consisted of 12 miles without water, the last few miles of which
were littered with volcanic rocks. The Kelton Road skirted this
section to the north. Excellent ruts still remain in this area
about 100 yards to the south and are available for hiking.
