Geocache Description:

This cache is at a very good lookout point in Vanderkloof and it gives a view over the dam, town below and the dam wall.

The Dam
Vanderkloof dam is the second largest dam in SA and the highest dam wall.
Inside the dam wall is an Eskom Hydro Power Station. Two hydro-power generators are inside the wall. The two generators can each produce 120 MW of electricity at a discharge of approximately 200 m3/s water. The hydro-power plant can therefore provide up to 240 MW of electricity at a flow rate of 400 m3/s .
The power station at Vanderkloof Dam is coupled to the Eskom network, which means that the plant can be used for supplying peak power demands or act as a standby back up for other power stations. The Vanderkloof Dam plays an important role in providing water for irrigation to more than 100 000 hectares of productive agricultural land. The dam is also perfect for angling and water related sports including sailing, skiing and windsurfing.

The Cache
The cache is on a koppie/hill next to Pride Rock Lodge and restaurant.
There is two ways accessing the area, you can enter through a small gate next to Pride Rock or you can go through reception and follow the look-out boards, just mention that you are geocachers.
The owners (Erny and Rika) at Pride Rock know about the cache and doesn’t mind you visiting the lookout view. They are the owners off the big cross on the hill and it is lid at night making this place visible from very far.
You are welcome to have a drink or meal afterwards at Pride Rock Restaurant.
