Geocache Description:

First State Challenge 2010- Arden- hidden by MikeOtt

Delaware Geocachers logo

The Delaware Challenge is back: First State Challenge 2010 sponsored by Delaware Geocachers! There are 21 new caches spread across the state of Delaware by volunteer cachers to give you an appreciation for the great areas of the First State. We are spotlighting New Castle County this year. These should all be fairly easy to find as they are either small or regular size with a maximum rating of 2/2. The actual challenge is now over and all the Pathtags and certificates have been awarded. This cache has been adopted by the hider.

Location

The Village of Arden was founded in 1900 by sculptor Frank Stephens and architect Will Price, with financial help from Joseph Fels, the soap manufacturer. One of 17 land trusts founded between 1894 and 1950, Arden is based on the single-tax economic philosophy of Henry George. As a result, a person's house is not taxed, only the land it sits on.

The land is owned in common and managed by three trustees. Inspired by the Garden-City Movement, half the land is woods and open space with two common greens. Town meetings reflect an enduring model of direct democracy. Every house in Arden is unique, even the birdhouses. Arden is the only entire municipality on the National Register of Historic Places. It has been a haven for artists and craftsmen.

The name "Arden" comes from the wooded retreat described in Shakespeare's "As You Like It" and the community has been a retreat since it was founded. Theatre is and has been a mainstay, as have the arts, crafts, concerts, weekly community dinners, the annual Arden Fair, and a dizzying array of activities residents have pursued ever since families started spending their summers here,

Cache Details

Park near the commons green and walk down Cherry Lane (which looks more like a driveway) to the trail head. The woodlands are closed from dusk to dawn. The cache is located in parkland along Naaman Creek and is only about 0.1 miles from the trailhead. When you get to the “Indian Fire Circle” you are just about there. With the large boulder field, there will be some signal bounce. The cache is not meant to be hard, so if you have problems, the hint totally gives it away.
