This is my first attempt at giving something back to the
“geocaching community”, I hope you enjoy. (IT MAY ALSO
BE AN IDEA TO HAVE TWEEZERS OR SUCH LIKE TO REMOVE THE LOG FROM
SOME OF THE CONTAINERS)
These caches are “dedicated” to my good mates R_See
& Ay_gee, hence the names of the caches.
These two guys were good enough to introduce me to this
“caching thing” a couple of years ago. We have been
through a lot together, such as cycling, motor biking, camping
& holidays. We often all go out together caching, sometimes
whilst the girls are doing their own thing. Ay_gee also initially
set me up with my PDA / GPS etc to get me going. (And he calls his
son a geek!) I couldn’t wish for two “better
mukkas”.
This circular route starts & ends in my own village of
Bovingdon.
Bovingdon is an attractive village on the edge of the Chilterns,
midway between Hemel Hempstead and Chesham. Bovingdon's most
recognisable landmark is the timber memorial protecting the village
well at the bottom of the High Street. It commemorates the life of
Granville Dudley Ryder who helped provide the village with piped
water in the early 19th century.
The first church was built in 1235 but Bovingdon did not become a
separate parish from Hemel Hempstead until 1833. The St Lawrence
Church of England is a splendid building with a large churchyard.
It was rebuilt in 1845 with the exception of the tower, under which
is placed an early fifteenth-century effigy of a knight.
Bovingdon Airfield was developed in 1941 and used as a base for the
US Air Force during the Second World War. Among the visitors to the
base were Big Band leader, Glenn Miller and Hollywood actor, Clark
Gable. The runways still exist today but the hangers were replaced
by HM Prison, 'The Mount', in 1988. The airfield is now home to
Bovingdon Market and also used for Short Circuit racing.
CAR PARKING CAN BE FOUND AT N 51 43.213, W 000 31.628. (Please take
care here, as it is a residential parking area)
The route is mainly footpath orientated, (it can get quite muddy in
the winter months, & is not always wheelchair friendly) with
one or two styles to hurdle here & there. It takes in of some
of the local villages, (and pubs if you get a little thirsty on
route), with some of the best views of the Chilterns & its
natural wildlife.
Please note that these readings were taken on a bleak day in
January, when the trees were bare – these may vary in the
summer months when the trees are in full bloom
Not all caches will have clues to the final coordinates for the
bonus.
Please bring your own pen/pencil with you as not all containers
have them
