Saskatoon according to Wanuskewin Heritage Park has been settled
for more than 9000 years. The first European settlers arrived much
later in the 1880s. The first permanent settlers came to escape the
ravages of drink in Ontario through the Temperance Colonization
Society (TCS). They were led by John Lake who received good advice
from Chief Whitecap of the Dakota First Nation. The original colony
received over 300 000 acres and laid claim to areas on both sides
of the South Saskatchewan River from Clark’s Crossing to
Moose Woods. The centrally located town site, now Nutana, was
chosen on the advice of Chief Whitecap who also provided the name
of Saskatoon. The name is thought to be derived from the Cree word
"missaskwatoomina", referring to the saskatoon berry shrubs that
grew along the riverbank. While the colony failed, the legacy of
the TCS lives on.

Temperance Street is our little bit of the colony. Enjoy the
overarching elm trees and the mixtures of homes form 1912 –
new. To keep the neighbourhood happy, please do not cache after
9:30 p.m. The cammo cache is between the street and the sidewalk.
There is no need to enter private property.
