This is a ammo can cache hidden high on a lesser peak on the
north end of the
Franklin Mountains. You can bike, hike, or drive up to the base of
the range
from the west...or hike south from Antony Gap. This is a remote
and trailess
part of the Franklin Mountains State Park. This hike is
steep...rocky... and
vegetated according to Franklin Mountain standards.
Cache is on top of that cliff...Lookin North with Organs in the
distance
I viewed the peak this cache
sits on while climbing the peak to the north for a tlepinski cache
(GC18PAF).
It looked very pointy from the north and it beconed me. It took me
over 16 months to get around to it. If
you look at pictures taken by cachers at tlepinski cache looking
south...you'll see exactly what I mean.
Those kind of peaks really call my name.
I got to this cache from a west
approach. I drove east out of Vinton to the State Park and parked
west of
Antony's Nose. From there I climbed up to the main Franklin ridge
and walked north along the ridge to the
cliffs under the peak. I found a very easy scramble up to the
top...but there was only one. Instead, you
could choose to make your approach from due west and climb up the
west slopes...or from a TH off Hwy 404 in
Antony Gap. Which ever route you choose you'll be rewarded with a
carpet of lechuguillas (spanish daggers)
dotted with a multitude of ocotillios. The terrain is fairly steep
and rocky. There are cliffs with substantial
exposure near the cache. At all times be aware of your surroundings
and mindful of snakes.
This cache is in Franklin Mountain State Park. It's placement
has been
authorized by Texas State Parks and Wildlife, and a copy is on file
at
the Franklin Mountain State Park Headquarters @ McKelligon
Canyon.
Please pay the park fee/use your Park Pass, and fill out the
registration
form, or call the park, so the Rangers know you are in the
park.
Cliffs I climbed to top out on the peak. Looking NW from
Franklin Ridge
Congrats to tlepinski for the
FTF on this Birddroppings cache!
