Halfway between the Equator and the North Pole - It all depends on
definitions. This is Definition 2 - Halfway is at N 45° 8'
45.7"
While you are on the Peninsula, please be sure to check out the
"1st
Option", along with the "3rd Option" for a greater understanding of
this simple question.
Why not N 45° ? The Earth is, in reality, an oblate spheroid
because the Earth's rotation cause it to bulge at its equator and
flatten at its poles. The exact distance between lines of latitude
depends on the modeling of the shape of the Earth. The one used
here is the one adopted by the International Astronomical Union in
1976 (GRS1975). It uses a mean radius of the Earth as 6,378.140 km
and a flattening of the spheroid of 1/298.2570
A small camo covered lock'n'lock box, containing log book, pencil,
and a few small trading items. Since this one is only about 5m into
the bush, you should be safe from snakes and bears.
RubberRabbit's parents live way up around Dorcas Bay Road, but we
find it is usually quicker to head back to the highway, and go
around past Singing Sands. Be sure to visit the town of Tobermory
before continuing your journey.
Yes, I know that we could discuss datums and mapping errors, but
that just proves there is no perfect answer. Special thanks to
Professor Steve Dutch at University of
Wisconsin for adding to my understanding of an apparently simple
question.
