Leonardo Fibonacci was born in Pisa, son of Guglielmo Bonaccio
(latin Filius-Bonaccii), his father was the director of the custom
office of the Republic of Pisa in Bougia-Algeria, responsible for
the importation of wax used to make candles in Italy and France (in
French the candle is still called “bougie”). In his youth Leonardo
followed his father in Algeria where he knew from the Arab traders
the “Abacus at the Hindi way”, in which, besides the use of
arabic-indian numbers, he learned the use of the ZERO, a notion
unknown in the Occidental World. Leonardo recognized immediately
the utility of that notion in order to simplify the calculation and
composed his famous book “Liber Abaci” which made him the most
famous european mathematician in the Middle-Age. It was followed by
“De Practica Geometriae” and “Liber Quadratorum”. His fan was the
Emperor Frederick II who wanted to meet him personally in Pisa and
with him had an important exchange of letters. It is recounted that
for the construction of the Castel del Monte Frederick II was
inspired by the works of Fibonacci.
In the chapter 12 of his “Liber Abaci” Fibonacci placed this
question: How Many Pairs of Rabbits Are Created by One Pair in One
Year? ? (Quot paria coniculorum in uno anno ex uno patto
germinantur?). To solve this problem Fibonacci introduced his
famous series in which each number is the sum of the previous
two:
0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89…

F(n)=0 for n=0; F(n)=1 for n=1; F(n)=F(n-1)+F(n-2) for n

The main property of the series is that the limit of the ratio
F(n)/F(n-1) for n to infinity is equal to 1,618033.. that is the
golden ratio. Such numbers are found in nature, in the shells of
mollusca, in flowers and in pinecones etc..
