Geocache Description:

This cache is located on Wire Island, which is in the middle of “The Branch” in Small Point, Town of Phippsburg. Access is by boat (3 hours before or after high tide) or by a difficult walk at low tide through the mudflats (do NOT go barefoot in the flats – clam shells). The cache is a small 3 inch x 4 inch camo lock n lock.

There are several water acess points. The closest access is from Head Beach ($5.00 parking fee charged during the summer for daily beach use) or from Hermit Island Campgrounds for those camping there. There is also an access point at the end of Aliquippa Road called "Aliquippa Landing", however you must be a Phippsburg resident, taxpayer, or a guest (staying in Phippsburg) to use it AND you must display a town permit on your vehicle (available at the Town Office 9-1, 2-5 weekdays), this Landing is also used by commercial fishermen - so please be respectful of their use. There is also an access point on Route 216 (Small Point Road) - park off the pavement on the west side of road just south of the Lobster House Restaurant and launch into Lobster House Cove (the first few hundred yards on this side of the road is OK - however it is posted "No Parking" further up and on the east side of the road).

No matter where you access the water make sure to check the tides for the area (visit link) and choose “South Harpswell”.

The cache contains a logbook, pencil, and small items (ie. pins and coins).

“The Branch” is known for its abundance of clams (need a town license for a small fee) and striper fishing during the summer. Small Point Harbor to the north of “The Branch” is home to many lobster boats and to one of the few remaining lobster pounds in Maine. There is an abundance of wildlife in the area – particularly blue herons, egrets, eider ducks and of course, the occasional seagull.
