DEUTSCH:
Die Rappenlochschlucht liegt etwa fünf Kilometer vom Stadtzentrum von Dornbirn in Vorarlberg, Österreich, entfernt. Sie ist eine der größten Schluchten Mitteleuropas. Die Schlucht entstand durch den Durchbruch der Ebniter- bzw. Dornbirner Ache durch die Kalk-Mergelberge (Kalkgestein) des vorderen Bregenzerwaldes. Dies dauerte 10 000 Jahre. Die Klamm im Kalkgestein ist 72m tief und wurde durch die großen Schmelzwassermassen aus den zurückweichenden Gletschern ausgewaschen.
Die Rappenlochschlucht ist durch einen Wandersteg erschlossen. Am Ausgang der Schlucht befindet sich der Staufensee, mit dem über 100 Jahre alten Wasserkraftwerk Ebensand. Der im Kraftwerk erzeugte Strom wird ins Vorarlberger Verbundsnetz eingespeist.
Im Mai 2011 ließ ein massiver Felssturz die Rappenlochbrückeeinge einstürzen und dabei wurde der unten verlaufende Weg bis zu 15m hoch verschüttet. Die Schlucht wurde nach diesem Vorfall gesperrt. Die Aufräumarbeiten dauerten bis Mitte August 2013. Am 24.08.2013 wurde die Rappenlochschlucht neu eröffnet. Nun gibt es eine neue Wegführung und neue Stege, die einen in die Schlucht führen.
Der Weg in die Schlucht startet beim gebührenpflichtige Parkplatz N 47° 23.375 E 09° 46.639.
ACHTUNG: Ein Besuch ist leider nur von Mitte April bis Ende Oktober, aus Witterungsgründen und jährlichen Wartungsarbeiten möglich! Von November bis April ist der Zugang zur Schlucht gesperrt!

Rappenloch Gorge is located about five kilometers away from the center of Dornbirn in Vorarlberg, Austria. It is one of the largest canyons in central Europe. The gorge was made by the breakthrough of Ebniter- or Dornbirner Ache by limestone mountains marl (limestone) to the front Bregenzerwald. This lasted 10 000 years. The limestone in the gorge is 72m deep and was washed because of the great melting water from the receding glaciers.
The rappenloch gorge is tapped with small wooden bridges. At the exit of the gorge is a lake called Staufensee, with its hydroelectric power plant Ebensand, which is over 100 years old. The power plant generated electricity is fed into Vorarlberger interconnected grid.
In May 2011 a massive rockslide collapse the Rappenloch bridge and goes down with big rocks on the trail beneath. So the way was blocked 15m hight. Because of this incident the Rappebloch Goreg were closed for cleanup work. The works take until mid-August 2013. On 24.08.2013 the Rappenloch Gorge were reopened. Now a new routing and new wooden bridges guide you in the gorge.
The starting point of the hike is the parking area at N 47° 23.375 E 09° 46.639.
WARNING: Because of the weather and annual maintenances, you can only visit the Gorge from April to end of October! From November to April, access to the gorge is blocked!
