A hidden gem in Sydney's north which very few people would know about. Aboriginal rock carvings and a magnificent view make the backdrop for this cache. At the northernmost end of Westleigh you can look for "Two Roos With A View".
Westleigh was developed as a sub-division in the 1970s with the name of the suburb derived from West (Thorn)leigh. Built in the days when developers could simply cut a swathe through native bushland, the suburb is like a peninsula, being hemmed in by bush on three sides. You will notice this as you traverse the length of Quarter Sessions Road, the spine of Westleigh, on your way to the GZ. Indeed the north part of Westleigh is as far north as Hornsby which can be seen across the valley.
At the end of the road there is a small block of land set aside with some Aboriginal rock carvings. The story behind the preservation of these carvings goes that a bulldozer driver was clearing away rocks for home sites and was pushing the rock with the carvings into another big pile when it was noticed by another worker or someone else – don’t quote me. Someone decided it was worth saving and the rock itself was trimmed to a manageable size and placed where it now sits. You can see how it has been “cut out”. It depicts two kangaroos, one slightly overlaying the other. Their feet are actually towards the house so they are upside-down if you are standing on the viewing platform. It is said that the best time to photograph them is in the early morning or late afternoon when the light which produces shadows in the grooves creates a better contrast. As with all such carvings, do not walk on the surface, do not chalk in the outlines or pour sand on them to make them stand out. Just enjoy a piece of Sydney’s long lost history.
While you’re there don’t miss the view – you should be able to spot a couple of fire towers up the magnificent Berowra Valley. Down there is the Great North Walk but please don’t be tempted to climb down the cliff here to get to The Deadly Tree (GC16R1X) which is only 250m away as the crow flies. Go back along Quarter Sessions Road a hundred metres or so to (WPT: S 33 42.055 E 151 04.575) where there is an entrance to the Great North Walk.
The cache is small but contains a pencil and enough room for some tiny swaps. Please put it back exactly as you find it.
Be aware that Muggles can see you from a couple of the houses but as you’ve got a reason to be there they are unlikely to bother you. If you have trouble, just enjoy the spot. After all that’s what geocaching is all about, not the numbers!
