Geocache Description:

Terrain is gradual climb through sagebrush

Butch Cassidy roamed this entire area and was friends with the folks in Brown's Park. A man once asked him how he hid his "loot" after he robbed a bank and he laughed. . . . He told the man that when they were on the run, with a posse hot on their trail, they most certainly did not have time to stop and dig a hole to bury their take . . . they simply threw it as hard as they could, while racing down the trail, hoping that they could come back later and pin point where it landed. This is why people today, still hunt and seek for hidden Outlaw Caches in Brown's Park. Some has been found, most will not be found. This cache is in Irish Canyon next to an old Overhang in the rocks by the cattleguard on County Road 10. This overhang is North of what is known today as the Irish Canyon Campgound, but 30 years ago, there was an old log cabin sitting back in the trees there that was known as Butch Cassidy's Cabin. Moffat County supposedly dismantled the cabin and took it to Craig where it was supposed to be reassembled but to my knowledge this has never been done, so I have no idea what happened to the cabin. The overhang was used by Indians and Outlaws and many of them including other Brown's Park Pioneers, carved their initials into the rock. 30 years ago, I saw the name of HOY and also the initials of Butch Cassidy. I was very dismayed today to discover that vandals have carved new names and silly little carvings of teddy bears and other things, destroying lots of history. I did manage to find the initials of C.McKnight and 1910 in good shape. Crawford McKnight was the son of Josie Bassett. Butch Cassidy was very good friends of the Bassett family and it has been said that at one time, Josie and Butch were sweet on each other. If you are hunting for it in the warmer months be very aware of rattlesnakes as there are plenty. My 3 daughters stood there years ago, arguing as to whether a snake was a rattler because they couldn't find any rattles, even tho it was coiled and hissing at them. I hid the cache when there was snow on the ground, so it is not difficult to manuever around, but you still have to be careful of slipping on rocks when they are wet. The cache is in the original container and all original contents with the exception of the travel bug, which has moved on. This cache is in a water resistant container, approx 11 x 12 inches with a handle. No there isn't any 25 dollar gold pieces hidden here. This cache consists of: Logbook & Pencil/Pens Tape Measure Keychain Indian Feather Charm Western Ornaments State Quarter in a Blue Egg Fishing pole and fish collectible Wanted Poster for Butch Cassidy, offering a $5,000 reward A self-guided tour map for Brown's Park Travel Bug on a Green M&M Keychain.
