Geocache Description:

All of our dogs, except for our newest puppy, Bandit, had their own caches. Now Bandit has one of her own! It is located in a wooded area near the southern end of the big dike at the Battle Run Recreation Area about 5 miles south of Summersville, West Virginia.

From U.S. Route 19 go west on State Route 129. If traveling north, this is a left-hand turn; if going south, turn right. After about 4 miles, you will see the sign for Battle Run Recreation Area on the right. From there, you have three options on how to go for this cache:

The Long Way: Stay on Route 129 and do not turn onto the Battle Run access road. Just past the entrance to Battle Run, the highway curves around to the right. As you come out of this curve, you will see a small gravel parking area on the right with space for about six cars and a red gate just beyond. That is the trailhead for Battle Run Trail, and the way to the cache. The one-way distance to the hiding place is slightly under one mile, so you are facing about a 2 mile hike if you choose this option. During the winter months when the gate is closed to Battle Run, this will be the best way to go for cache.

The Medium-Distance Way: Turn into Battle Run Recreation Area and proceed to the swimming area. There is a large parking lot on the left. At times during the summer months there may be a $2.00 fee to park in this lot, but it is the most convenient parking to the maintenance road you will be hiking to the cache. Right beside the parking area you will see a red gate and this maintenance road going uphill into the woods. This is the way you want to go. The one-way distance to the cache is .60 mile, or a round trip distance of 1.20 miles.

The Short Way: Drive all the way to the end of Battle Run access road and park in the closest available space to the Shoreline Fishing Access trail. Just a short distance out this trail, which is actually a maintenance road that goes along the base of the big dike, you will leave the trial and bushwhack up a very steep, grassy bank beside the dike to the trail at the top. Once on the top, you will be very close to the hiding place. If you choose this route, which is the most difficult terrain-wise, the way to the cache is only about .30 mile, or a round trip distance of slightly over 1/2 mile.

No matter which route you take, once you are at the southern end of the big dike the cache is just a short distance from the maintenance road that goes downhill on the side of the dike opposite the lake. From this road, when you are directly across from the cache, the hiding place is about 100 feet into the woods.
The cache is a small decon container that only holds a few small trade items, a pencil and a log book. Be sure rehide the cache just as you found it so it will still be there for others.
