Geocache Description:

This multi cache takes you for a short drive around the oldest suburb of East London. Watch out for muggles at the final destination. This cache is best done in daylight hours.

Waypoint 1: S33 01.872 E027 54.578
This building was erected in 1866 as the first Magistrate’s Court, Customs House and Revenue Office. In 1882, the Magistrate’s Court was moved to Panmure and the building became a Post Office. It is a National Monument.

Waypoint 2: S33 01.874 E027 54.710
On the corner is Erf No 1, the 3rd plot sold to a civilian in 1849. Descendants of the first owner presented the erf to the City and a plaque attached to a stone, marks the site.

Waypoint 3: S33 01.883 E027 54.549
This open space park was named in honour of the visit of Prince Alfred, 2nd son of Queen Victoria, to the eastern Cape in 186B. A market was established in 1873 with John Venn as market master. As no produce was received, he had to retire. A plaque has been erected by The Border Historical Society.

Waypoint 4: S33 01.939 E027 54.524
This is the mother church of East London. The rector of this church was instrumental in starting the first school in East London in 1881 for boys only. The West Bank School is situated in Hood Street. The first rector was appointed in 185x and the Church was dedicated in 186y.

Waypoint 5: S33 02.066 E027 54.420
Many of the houses in West Bank date back to the 1850s and 1860s. Wood and iron houses were common as this was a form of building construction which was inexpensive, easy to erect and could be easily transported if a venture was unsuccessful. Some have been plastered over and cement pillars have replaced the original wooden veranda supports. The selected house is semi-detached and appears well preserved.

Waypoint 6: S33 02.436 E027 53.940
The Lighthouse was installed on 4th June 1895 with an optic apparatus that produces 6 000 000 candelas and a sea mile range of 31 sea miles. It has a revolving electric group flashing 4 flashes every 40 seconds. The height of the focal plane stands 55m above high water.

Waypoint 7: S33 02.415 E027 53.949
The cemetery was laid out in 1879 and contains many graves of great interest. One such grave is that of George Walker who was the Harbour Master for 2C years. He died on 17th May 1877 aged 55.
