Ford Madness - IOM Ford Series #4 - Rushen Abbey Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Marble Madness: Had hoped to have a new cache in place by now but unseen events mean it's unlikely I'll get a chance to replace in the next few weeks - hopefully will be able to put a new cache here before the summer to keep the series alive.

Geocache Description:

Parking available for numerous cars at Commisioners public car park at the back of Rushen Abbey. GPS reception can be tricky close to the cache so we suggest you get your bearings away from tree cover before searching.

A ford is a place in a watercourse (most commonly a stream or river) that is shallow enough to be crossed in a vehicle.

This cache is part of a series of caches, taking you to some of the fords that can be driven through on the Island.

The cache is a small Tupperware box containing a log book, pencil and a few small swaps.

Rushen Abbey is the most substantial and important medieval religious site in the Isle of Man. Sitting by the Silverdale Burn in what is now Ballasalla, the Abbey lies less than two miles from Castle Rushen, the main seat of political power during this period.

King Olaf I, the statesman son of Godred Crovan, granted the land on which the Abbey was built in 1134. Originally home for monks of the Sauvignac order, the Abbey soon came within Cistercian control. It developed as the Island’s seat of religious power and would have housed the main body of knowledge and literacy for the Island. With the Abbey are associated the most important medieval documents relating to the Island, including the Chronicles of the Kings of Man and the Isles.

Manx National Heritage have bought and are renovating the former Rushen Abbey hotel and pub that overlooks the cache site, which has lain empty and increasingly derelict for a number of years despite being next to the medieval abbey.

Parking available for numerous cars at Commisioners public car park at the back of Rushen Abbey.

As these caches were set in the summer when water levels were low please take care in the winter months when levels will be higher. Also, please take care at each of the cache sites as a number of them are on single track roads.
