Geocache Description:

Congratulations Wal-Mart Man for the FTF!
Wal-Mart Man made a clean sweep of my caches
during an 8 mile hike of the Trinity Trail North in 104° heat!

This 200-400 year old Sycamore tree stands 101 feet tall and has 25-and-a-half- foot circumference with a crown spread of 126 feet from branch tip to branch tip. It was discovered by the Trinity Trail Preservation Association (a grass roots non-profit organization that is dedicated to preserving hiking and riding trails along Lake Lavon) while mapping an addition to the trail near Lucas. The Texas Forestry Department was contacted and after investigating, learned the tree is tied for the State's Largest tree. The land is managed by the United States Corps of Engineers and they have granted access to all of the Trinty Trail.

This tree in Lucas, has received 439 points based on the measurements taken, though the forestry service is waiting for verification if the third branch of the tree can be counted in the measurement. If the third branch is counted, then the tree will be considered the co-champion for the largest tree in Texas title. Points are awarded by the forest service based on height, width and crown spread measurements of the tree.

This giant Sycamore's growth is attributed in part to nourishment it receives from a nearby fresh water creek that flows into Lake Lavon.

What the Sycamore has seen in its lifetime
When the tree was a sapling ...
the Caddo Indians gathered beneath its branches for shade

When the tree was half a century old ...
farmers were gathering nearby and using the stream as their water source

When the tree was a century old ...
six railroads were crisscrossing the county near the tree

When the tree was a 150 years old ...
Lake Lavon was being planned and built

This cache was supposed to be an Earth Cache, but the reviewers at earthcache.org with their infinate wisdom stated that trees do not qualify. Hopefully, someday this cache will grow up to be and actual Earth Cache.
The hike to this cache is 4 miles one way starting from the boat ramp parking and 4.5 miles from the actual trail head (hince the terrain rating).

Coordinates were taken with the tree canopy and a thunderstorm overhead so if you happen to get better coordinates, please post them and I'll update the listing.
