Geocache Description:

D/S “Rokta

D/S “Rokta”
On a fierce stormy night on april 3, 1938, the freighter D/S “Rokta” from Øystese, Eides Rederi, ran aground on the shoals of Galleskjæra.
The ship was on its way south, bound for England with cargo of slate from Alta Skiferbrudd.
The shipwreck was discovered the next morning from the island Bjørnsund, and a rescue mission was organized. Local fishing boats and the rescue boat “Christian Bugge” braved the stormy weather and managed to save some of the crew, but a few local heroes lost the lives.

This monument was unveiled by Wilhelm Møllerstrøm, one of the “Rokta” survivors.

The monument was sculptured by Nicolaus Widerberg, and the slate was a gift from Alta Skiferbrudd.
