Geocache Description:

A historic walk around Lower and Upper Upnor on roads and footpaths. There are 7 traditional caches of varying sizes nano – regular. A bonus multi cache is also part of the walk.

Parking is available at the end of Lower Upnor Road in a large public car park with toilets nearby.

A map of the area is useful, especially when finding the footpaths.
Length: approx 4 km, approx 2 hrs

From here you can see why Upnor is in such a prominent position for the military.

Chatham dockyard was in use for over 400years and provided 500 ships for the Royal Navy.
The dockyard finally closed in 1984, due to the size of ships being built couldn’t sail on the Medway, due to the size of the river.

At it’s height it employed 10,000 people.

A ferry ran from the Royal Engineers to the Dockyard to take servicemen to and from ships and their barracks.

For training and when large amounts of men needed to be moved the RE’s would build bridges across the Medway at this point.

Please be aware that if the tide is high (over 6m at chatham) you probably will not be able to reach this cache.... unless you wear wellies.
