At the beginning of the XIV century the village of Sant’Angelo in Fonte was on the hills north of the baptistery of San Giovanni in Fonte (GCH58C - Water and Ruins). The small castle of the village was the property of the Sanseverino family, count of Marsico and founder of the Certosa di Padula (GC1TT89 – [CAAC] Il grande giardino della clausura).
In 1315 the feud was given to the Valenzano family who founded, next to the village, a convent of Cistercian nuns of the order of Saint Bernard. In the cloister of the convent there is a cave that was used for the cult of the Angel (St. Micheal the Archangel) who gave the name to the village.
Unfortunately the village and the convent had a short life since they were abandoned 33 years later due to plague.
In 1508, when both the village and the convent reduced in ruins the feud was sold to the Certosa di Padula in order to pay off the debt of the Sanseverinos. The Chartusians were interested in the productivity of the land more than in using the castle, thus also the castle reduced in ruin shortly.
Nowadays traces of the ancient splendors of the castle can be found only in the decorations of one of the three big windows, characterized by a gothic opening with multiple arches made of earthenware bricks, which are very rare to find in gothic buildings.
The ruins of the castle (N40 22.033 E015 37.973) and the convent (N40 22.110 E015 38.006) are reachable by parking the car here (N40 21.956 E015 38.061) and taking a 5 minutes walk along a short, well signed, but not much attractive path.
Alternatively, to people who like adventures, I suggest to park at N40 22.070 E015 37.730 and take an half an hour walk along the unpaved road which leads into a nice oak groove. Nothing to say to the ones who are used to hike in the nature, but I have to advise the less experienced by saying that this unpaved road is not a signed path and is not well maintained, thus the GPS is useful to find the direction.
Nearby is a picnic area (N40 21.777 E015 37.881).

All’inizio del XIV secolo, sulle colline poco a nord del Battistero di San Giovanni in Fonte (GCH58C - Water and Ruins) sorgeva il villaggio di Sant’Angelo in Fonte col suo piccolo castello, proprietà della famiglia Sanseverino, conti di Marsico, e fondatori della Certosa di Padula (GC1TT89 – [CAAC] Il grande giardino della clausura).
Nel 1315 il feudo di Sant’Angelo fu dato in suffeudo alla famiglia Valenzano che fondò, in prossimità del villaggio, un convento di suore cistercensi dell’ordine di San Bernardo. Dal chiostro del convento si accedeva ad una grotta che era utilizzata per il culto dell’Angelo (San Michele Arcangelo) da cui prende nome il villaggio.
Purtroppo il villaggio ed il vicino convento ebbero vita breve perché furono abbandonati appena 33 anni dopo a causa della peste.
Nel 1508, quando ormai sia il villaggio che il convento erano già ruderi, per estinguere i debiti accumulati dalla famiglia Sanseverino, il feudo di Sant’Angelo fu venduto alla Certosa di Padula, che era più interessata alla produttività agricola delle terre circostanti che all’utilizzo del castello.
Da allora anche il castello si è trasformato in un rudere abbandonato. Rimane traccia degli antichi splendori solo nel decoro di una delle tre finestre del piano superiore, caratterizzata da un vano ad arco acuto con all’interno un traforo di archetti in mattoni, rarissimo nell’arte gotica.
I ruderi del castello (N40 22.033 E015 37.973) e del convento (N40 22.110 E015 38.006) sono raggiungibili in 5 minuti archeggiando sul ciglio della strada alle coordinate (N40 21.956 E015 38.061) attraverso un brevissimo, ben segnalato, ma non molto attraente sentiero.
In alternativa, a chi ha voglia di avventura, suggerisco di parcheggiare l’auto alle coordinate (N40 22.070 E015 37.730) e percorrere per mezz’ora la sterrata che si addentra nel bel bosco di querce. Nulla da segnalare a chi è abituato ad escursioni in montagna, ma devo avvisare i meno pratici che questa sterrata non fa parte di un sentiero segnalato e non è ben mantenuta, quindi l’utilizzo del GPS aiuta molto a trovare la direzione.
