Geocache Description:

Welcome to River Walk, a greenway trail along the Housatonic River in the downtown center of Great Barrington, MA.

From the Berkshire Eagle’s editorial dated June 16, 2009: “The natural vegetation had given way to tons of rubble and debris, but from that discouraging mess emerged the Housatonic River Walk. The long path to reclamation of this formerly beautiful and now beautiful again stretch along the river as it winds through Great Barrington became official this weekend with its dedication as a National Recreation Trail. The River Walk is along the W.E.B. Du Bois River Garden Park, which gives the area both environmental and historical significance. It is now a part of the 12,000-mile America's National Trail System, which includes the famous Freedom Trail that makes its way through Boston. The River Walk, a dream come true for long-time advocate Rachel Fletcher, the River Walk's director, owes its existence to roughly 2,200 volunteers who over the years removed more than 400 tons of rubble and debris from the long-neglected river and its banks and replanted the lost natural vegetation.” River Walk roughly follows the west bank of the Housatonic River between Cottage Street and Bridge Street. The two completed sections of trail are linked by Dresser Avenue and River Street. An excellent brochure is available. Please check out their website - http://www.gbriverwalk.org/ . This magnetic nano geocache is found on the upstream section which extends from the River Walk bulletin board at Rite Aid on Main Street to the William Stanley Overlook. The trail exits at the stairs to St. Peter’s Church parking lot on Dresser Avenue. We found this to be a short, but fully packed walk. It’s a place to catch your breath while enjoying the river and its surroundings. Permission has been granted to place a cache here. THE CACHE IS FOUND BY STAYING ON THE TRAIL! The riverbanks are fragile and are in the process of restoration. It is also a matter of safety. The trail is closed during the winter months. First to Find Fame goes to Rocking the Goat!
