MARITIME HISTORY TRAIL

The Lewes Maritime History Trail is a culmination of research, design and the search for illustrative images using the combined efforts of the City of Lewes, the Lewes Historical Society, the Delaware River and Bay Lighthouse Foundation, the Overfalls Maritime Museum Foundation, the Delaware River and Bay Authority, the Cape Henlopen State Park, the University of Delaware’s College of Earth, Ocean and Environment, the Friends of the Canalfront Park, and the Lewes Chamber of Commerce, with support from the Greater Lewes Foundation and the University of Delaware SeaGrant Program. The purpose of the trail is to encourage off-season historic tourism when many of the historic and cultural attractions may not be available.

The sign trail will recognize ten aspects of Lewes’ maritime history: The College of Earth, Ocean and Environment, the Lewes Life-Saving Station, the Overfalls Lightship, the shipbuilding industry, the War of 1812, the lighthouses in the Delaware Bay, the menhaden fishing industry, the Delaware River and Bay Pilots, the two Delaware Bay breakwaters, and the Quarantine Station that was located in the Cape Henlopen State Park.

In 2006, the City of Lewes was designated a Preserve America Community, one of the first in Delaware to be so honored. The Preserve America program was instituted through the National Park Service by former First Lady Laura Bush shortly after her husband’s election in 2000. The City applied for the Preserve America Grant in 2007.
