Geocache Description:

A Kayak Cache in Back Bay

This cache is located on Big Cedar Island which was once part of a larger island that included Little Cedar Island. In the 1880s, farmer, waterman and hunter John Williams started a boarding lodge for hunters and fishermen here and also built a 2-story house for his family. Williams sold the property in 1914; the last owners of the Cedar Island Hunting and Fishing Lodge were Three Fine Old Gentlemen to whom the memorial is dedicated that you can find at the additional way point provided below. The island was acquired by the State in 1977 and is now part of False Cape State Park. The original house, home of the Williams family, has burned down and all that remains is the second clubhouse that was built in the 1930s.

From: Johnson, A. and Coppedge, B. (1991) Gunning Clubs of Back Bay & Currituck Sound. CurBac Press, Virginia Beach.

To visit this cache, you can launch your kayak or canoe at the Back Bay NWR parking lot or any of the Back Bay launch sites published by Kayak Virginia Beach. Be sure to check the weather before departure. At winds greater than 5-10 knots it can get sporty out there. The container is a small camoflaged plastic bottle containing a log sheet, a pen and an unactivated geocoin and a pathtag for the first finders.

A Virginia State Park Geocaching Permit is on file with the Park Ranger Office.
