Geocache Description:

This cache is located on the grounds of the Read House and Gardens. (Coordinates are averaged.) Cache contents: FTF Prize, Punch Cards, Hole Punch, Log Book and Pen, Historic Images, Historic Background Information.

Why Old New Castle? This cache relates to an exhibit currently running (June 4th-November 28th, 2009) called Whales, Weirs and Waterfowl: Delawareans Working on the Water. The history of these waterways and the people they’ve impacted is an incredibly important one to Delaware history. This is one of five caches hidden throughout the state of Delaware related to this exhibition. Historic images and information in this cache focus on shad fishing.

There are punch cards and unique hole punches in each cache box. If you find (and punch your card at) all five caches, you’ll receive 2 for 1 admission to the Delaware History Museum and be entered into a drawing for a free six month family membership. There will be six drawings total (1 each month for the run of the exhibit). Punch cards are first come, first served. They will not be replaced once they are all gone.

There is a first to find prize in this cache. (The FTF prize is the same in all 5 caches). There are no trade-items in this cache but if you’d like to leave something it would be great to get a trade started! There could be some signal bounce when you’re finding this cache.

This cache is only accessible when the Read House is open to the public (Wed., Thursday, Friday and Sunday from 11:00-4:00, Saturday from 10:00-4:00. This cache is outside and no admission is required to find the cache, only to tour the house. Restoration is set to begin on the house, but it will remain open during normal operating hours.

It is placed on private property with the kind permission of the Delaware Historical Society. Please treat the area with the respect it deserves.
