Geocache Description:

Geo13's recent abundance of Richmond County caches (his 'Country Roads' and 'Richmond County Signs' series of caches) has inspired this set of Richmond County caches. Although we have placed caches seemingly all over the state, there's plenty of history right here at home!!

On February 19, 1884, a killer tornado visited Richmond County. Although accounts vary, between 30 and 45 people were killed in the worst single event in the county's history. The following are excerpts from the ARGUS, Wadesboro's newspaper of the time:

"The most distressing news comes from Rockingham and the loss of life there seems to be very great. Thirty to forty persons were killed and a great many wounded. All the business was suspended and the physicians and citizens did their best to releive suffering. Eleven dead bodies, eight coloered and three white men were gotten from the debris yesterday morning and were placed in the Court House.

The small village of Philadelphia with some twenty families was struck and Mr. Editor, if you were describing a battle, you would say "here was the thickest of the fight". Indeed, the furies of the storm seem to have had their merriest carnival here, for within a limited radius fifteen were found dead and and a score or more were seriously disabled. The eye sickened at the sight and moved the heart.Together with the Philadelphia Colored Methodist Church, more than fifty houses were destroyed and the loss cannot be less than $15,000."

You are looking for an ammo can hidden deep within the small Philadelphia community which recovered and continues to this day.
