I found this rustic building last winter when I was cross-country skiing on some of Stowe's conserved land in the Sterling area. Looking at the building, all I could think of was Jonathan Edward's Shanty song. So this cache is intended as a tribute to one of my favorite folk-rock performers, Jonathan Edwards.
Gonna sit down in the kitchen
And fix me something good to eat
And make my head a little high
And make this whole day complete
Cuz we gonna lay around the shanty, mama
And put a good buzz on
The cache is about a 3/4-mile walk from the nearest road, Maple Run Lane. Park at the end of the maintained road, at N 44°31.362, W 72°42.306. I don't recommend you try to drive further. The unmaintained lane is narrow, muddy, and there's no place to turn around if you get stuck. In the winter it is used as a snowmobile trail, and you're better off walking along it. You will go through the Stowe Land Trust Adams Property. Stay on Maple Run until you come to Old Billings Road, a cross-country ski trail in winter. From here it is about .2 uphill to the cache. If you continue farther along the old road, it soon becomes the route of the Catamount Trail and connects with the Edson Hill trail system.
You can also access the cache from the Sterling Falls Gorge parking area, following Maple Run to Old Billings Road. A loop can be made by going one direction on the Catamount Trail, which connects Maple Run near the Sterling Falls end with Old Billings Road.
