Geocache Description:

Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church, Kiowa, Nebaska, made its beginning in the fall,1880, when members of the Friedensau Congregation were released to form a new congregation in this vicinity. On August 28, 1881 the first church building, which also served as the Bethlehem Lutheran School, was dedicated. Records show that in 1901 one teacher taught 76 pupils in this one-room school. In 1882 the congregaton joined the Nebraska District of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS). A new church was built in 1898 and was located just east of this cemetery. In 1905 the first pipe organ in Thayer County was installed in this church at a cost of $1,100. A new one-room school building was erected in 1925 and stood just southeast, (across the intersection), of this cemetery. The final church service was held on January 1,1967 and members transferred to LCMS churches in neighboring towns. Kiowa Kid was a baptized member of this church and attended the school until its closing. She has lots of great memories of this church on the hill as well the pleasure of attending a one-room school house! Four generations of her family members are buried here. Take in the beauty of this peaceful place.
