Back in the the winter of either 86 or 87 I was given a chance
to film for American Birkienbiner Ski Race. I was to travel up and
down the Birkie trail and film the "Race" That is also the
year that Hall of Fame Wide Reciver Lynn Swan was covering the
Birkie for ABC's Wide World of Sports and was only one of a few
years that the Birkie ran from Hayward to Cable. I got to
meet him and shake his hand. They were filming as "if" Mr.
Swan was skiing the Birkie. I don't think the man had ever been on
a pair of cross country skies before in his life. This
section of the trail is called Crash & Burn thou there might be
other section of trail that people use this same name. Mr.
Swan, in his skin tight ski suit, strapped on a pair of skies and
tried to ski from near the location of this cace, down the hill.
across the road, around the corner and up the next hill. He
tried it at least 3 times, taking out a half a dozen other skiers
each time. I think should have stuck with reporting and
catching a football. I never did find out what happend to
that tape,
