LinearZZ: Looks like nothing is going to happen from VicParks so it is probably time to to retire the cache. Maybe bring up Mark II if the situation improves.

Geocache Description:

The location is a microcosm of temperate rainforest. Please appreciate its beauty and its vulnerability.

Sitting at the highest point on the Great Ocean Road, Lavers Hill is situated at a major road junction connecting the coastal region of Johanna, Moonlight Head and the Twelve Apostles with the forest and farming land around Beech Forest, Gellibrand and Carlisle River.

The Great Ocean Road was built by 3000 returned servicemen (or "Diggers") as a war memorial for fellow servicemen who had been killed in the First World War. The idea for the road was suggested as far back as 1864. Surveying began in 1918 and construction took place between 1919 and 1932.

Running south of Lavers Hill, the Great Ocean Road follows and crosses the path of an older road simply referred to as The Old Ocean Road. It’s origins are not clear but possibly it connected Lavers Hill with Johanna.

This cache might encourage others to investigate further the history of the area. Apart from a logbook, a couple of geocoins have been tossed in that might like to travel around the area.

Any queries will be referred to local support who suggested the location and led us past the mosquitoes and leeches.
