Geocache Description:

This is a nice easy walk through pleasant fields – look out for Llamas along the way. Because there are stiles to negotiate, it is not wheelchair or buggy friendly. Other caches along this stretch are Monarch Way #6 (GC1PYPP), #7 (GC1PYQ5), #8 (GC1 PYQD) and #9 (GC1PYQT). Distance from Doynton parking to the Hinton road is 2.25 miles. Monarch Way is the 610 mile route used by King Charles II after the Battle of Worcester in 1651 when he was pursued by the Parliamentary forces under Oliver Cromwell. Charles first travelled north, where he hid in the famous oak tree at Boscobel. He then travelled south through the Cotswolds and the Mendips to the South Coast at Charmouth, and finally along the South Downs to Shoreham from where he made his escape to France. Doynton is a picturesque village situated on the lower slopes of the Cotswolds, approximately two miles south-east of Pucklechurch. The River Boyd passes through the northern part of Doynton, and the village is surrounded by rich pastures and varied topography. Its history can be traced back to the Doomsday Book (1086). The Holy Trinity Church (grade II*-listed) at the centre of the village dates back to Saxon times and would have been a landmark for King Charles II in his flight from Oliver Cromwell. Its features include 12th century herringbone masonry on the south wall - a style almost unique in this part of the country - and a 12th century leper window. North-west of the church there is evidence of a group of mediaeval fishponds which provided an important source of food to supplement the diet of villagers in the Middle Ages. Both villages have pubs that serve real ales and nice food if you need refreshing after your stroll. Enjoy the stroll, and happy hunting!
