Geocache Description:

Cemetery with easy access from vehicle

The Cache is a pill bottle located near my parent's grave marker with a log, pencil and small trade items. Shouldn't be too hard to figure where it's hiding.

The Fry’s Valley Moravian Church was founded in 1857 as a German speaking congregation. Swiss and German farmers along with their families who settled the valley were the founding members. Today, many Fry’s Valley residents are descendants of those original settlers. As you walk around the cemetery, note the names of valley families.

Fry’s Valley is one of six Moravian congregations in Tuscarawas County that remind us of our local history.

Starting in the mid 1700’s, Moravian missionaries established outposts among the Delaware (Lenape) living in what would become Tuscarawas County. The villages of Schoenbrunn “Beautiful Spring”, Gnadenhutten “Tents of Grace”, Salem (near present Port Washington), and later Goshen were all mission villages. During this time some of the most notable individuals in frontier America were familiar faces in these villages. Lenape chief Netawatwees, Boone, Simon Kenton, Logan, Gelelemend “Killbuck”, and Simon Girty were all well known to the residents of the Moravian Villages on the Tuscarawas.

As you enjoy the peaceful valley take a moment to reflect. Not so long ago… others walked from here into history.
