Looking Through the Window

About the
Hike:
This is a wonderful hike along the Long Trail starting just off
Duxbury / River Road in Jonesville. The trailhead can be found at
N44 22.180 W72 52.749 which is the parking lot for the Long
Trail.
The trailhead leaves the back of the parking lot, which happens to
be the lowest point of the Long Trail and follows the Bamforth
Ridge. The ridge is named after Eugen L. Bamforth who was a
tireless trail worker.
The hike is approx 1.4 miles one way and you will have a total
elevation gain of a little over 1,000 feet. It is a nice change up
of climbs followed by a little down or level walking to recover. I
must admit the last 400' to the Window is a real calf-burner, but
no worries there is a nice bench to sit, rest and enjoy the
wonderful view!
The Duxbury Window and bench is located at N44 21.655 W72 52.087,
stop and enjoy the view before heading off to the cache which is
about 0.1 miles further up the trail. Your GPSr arrow will point a
'straight line' distance of 200' or so, but don't try it, just use
the trail. There is really no reason to do any bushwhacking, the
entire hike is intended to follow the white blazes of the LT. Even
with the switch-backs it is a good workout.
On your way up or down you can stop at our 'Duxbury Warm-Up' cache.
It's a nice rest stop on your hike.
About Duxbury
Window:
Duxbury Window is the first lookout on the Bamforth Rigde and
offers a view of the Winooski Valley and Bolton Mountain.
About the
Cache:
You are looking for a 2 cup lock-n-lock. It is about 70' off the
trail in a very large birch tree. The tree has two huge trunks,
with the left trunk then splitting into 3 and the right splits into
2 large trunks. It is very winter friendly at about 4' off the
ground.
We really hope you have a great hike to Duxbury Window!
