The Eidolon Nature Preserve is located along the summit and east side of Sideling Hill, west of Berkeley Springs in Morgan County. It was purchased in 1945 by Louis and Marguerite Zapoleon, who lived in Washington, D.C. and Florida and used and cherished the property as a weekend and summer retreat. They named it Eidolon after phantom women of Greek mythology who were created by Zeus from mist and light. Translated from the Greek, the word means "image of the ideal."
The previous paragraph was taken from the Eidolon website. Please visit The Eidolon Home Page for more detailed information and history of this beautiful preserve and the Potomac Valley Audubon Society Home Page for more information about PVAS.
