Ladybug Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

LBREWSTER: Since it had been a year since anyone had found this cache I went to check on it. It seems to be MIA and the area is very overgrown with brambles. I am therefore archiving this cache. I may use this theme again because I think Lady Bugs are so cute and beneficial.

Geocache Description:

Ladybug, ladybug fly away home,

Your house is on fire and your children are gone

The Ladybug nursery rhyme was first documented in England in1644. The rhyme was thought to originate when the farmers burnt their fields in the fall. They prized ladybugs as a beneficial insects and wanted their safe return the following year. It was also a game played by children when a ladybug landed on them. The child would chant. "Ladybug ladybug fly away home." If the ladybug flew away it meant that your wish would come true.

Garden stores now carry ladybugs for sale. For under $20 a gardener can buy 1500 ladybugs that will take care of a small garden up to 1.200 sq ft.  Garden ladybugs are used for controlling aphids and other slow moving pests and are the most popular and widely used beneficial insect. A single ladybug is capable of consuming up to 60 aphids per day and will also eat a variety of other insects and larvae including scales, mealy bugs, leaf hopper, mites and various types of soft-bodied insects.

The life cycle of the ladybug is between four to six weeks.  In the spring the adults lay up to three hundred eggs in an aphid colony.  The eggs hatch in two to five days.  The newly hatched larvae feed on aphids for up to three weeks, and then they enter the pupa stage.  The adult ladybug emerges about a week later. There may be as many as six generations of ladybugs hatched in a year.

Ladybugs have always been good luck symbols. If you chant the verse you may have good luck finding the cache. The lock and lock is filled with ladybug toys (of course) and an FTF pin.

The ladybug cache is found in Northern Stony Brook Preserve in East Amwell Township. The 1.062-acre Preserve lies within the Sourland Mountain Range and is part of a network of contiguous preserved properties that extends for 60 miles along the ridge. Open daily from dawn to dusk. Only hiking is permitted: no motorized vehicles, horses or bicycles are allowed, and dogs must be on a leash. There are more than 5 miles of trails through woods, meadows and across streams.. The New Jersey Trails is a good source of information and a trail map. This Preserve is maintained by D&R Greenway Land Trust. Deer hunting is allowed by permission of the owners. Make sure to wear appropriate blaze or hunter orange clothing when visiting during hunting season. There is no hunting permitted on Sunday.

The main parking lot is on Mountain Road.A secondary parking area is in the Sourland Mountain Reservation lot. You must then cross Hopewell-Wertsville (Rileyville road) and walk 1/10 mile to connect with the green trail in Northern Stony Brook Preserve. The trail starts between two private properties so be sure to stay on the trail. At the junction with the main green trail take the left fork (which is less obvious). The cache is no more than 25 ft from the trail.
