North Jersey Checkpoint Challenge
Checkpoint Nanga Parbat

North Jersey Checkpoint Challenge

Nanga Parbat is the ninth highest mountain on Earth. Nanga Parbat means "Naked Mountain" in Urdu, parbat deriving from the Sanskrit word parvata meaning "mountain, rock", and nanga from the Sanskrit word nagna meaning "bare naked". Known as the "Killer Mountain," Nanga Parbat was one of the deadliest of the eight-thousanders for climbers in the first half of the twentieth century; since that time it has been less so, though still an extremely serious climb. It is also an immense, dramatic peak that rises far above its surrounding terrain.

But you do not have to go to Asia to find this cache! You just need to visit the splendid Laurelwood Arboretum in Wayne, NJ. This cache will fulfill the “Nanga Parbat” requirement for the North Jersey Checkpoint Challenge

Laurelwood Arboretum is open free to the public, every day, dawn to dusk, except during emergency conditions. Laurelwood is situated between Colfax Rd. and Pines Lake Drive, bordered on one end by Vale Road. The public parking lot is located through the open gate on Pines Lake Drive. Laurelwood Arboretum, which was founded and tended for over four decades by Dorothy Knippenberg (1910-2006), features woodland trails, wildlife, two ponds and hundreds of varieties of rhododendrons, azaleas and other unusual species of plants and trees. Originally a commercial nursery, Laurelwood Arboretum is now a public park owned by the Township of Wayne and maintained with the assistance of the Friends of Laurelwood Arboretum, funded through memberships, bequests and donations. Memberships and private and public support help ensure that this unique botanical destination will remain a place of restful contemplation for generations of visitors, hikers, bird-watchers, artists and gardeners who come to be inspired and renewed by Laurelwood's beauty and plant diversity.

John and Dorothy Knippenberg, former residents of the Pines Lake community, purchased the 30-plus acre botanical oasis now known as Laurelwood Arboretum in the 1930s. From 1961 Laurelwood was operated as a wholesale nursery specializing in rhododendrons and azaleas. Laurelwood and Dorothy Knippenberg became renowned in the horticultural world for their registered hybrids, many of which still grow in the Arboretum today.

After the death of John Knippenberg, the Arboretum became part of the Wayne Township Parks System. Since 2004, Laurelwood has been preserved by Friends of Laurelwood Aboretum and maintained with the assistance of Mrs. Knippenberg (who passed away in June of 2006), volunteers and the Township.

Official NJCC Information

The Northern New Jersey Cachers (NNJC) are sponsoring the North Jersey Checkpoint Challenge series. This challenge is intended to take geocachers on a tour of Northern New Jersey (loosely defined as north of I-78) while finding caches placed by members of the NNJC. On the tour, we hope you will find North Jersey an interesting and beautiful part of our great state.

Scattered around the area are 26 checkpoint caches and a final challenge cache - North Jersey Checkpoint Challenge (GC1NNJC). The names of the individual checkpoint caches are based on a phonetic alphabet using mountain names since North Jersey is the mountainous region of the state. The 26 checkpoints do not have to be completed in any particular order. See the NJCheckpoint bookmark for the complete list of caches.

Hidden within the 26 checkpoint caches are numbers to be used in determining the coordinates of the final North Jersey Checkpoint Challenge cache – please be sure to note them while you are there.

While there are no special logging requirements for the 26 checkpoint caches, there are special logging requirements for the final challenge cache. Complete information can be found on the North Jersey Checkpoint Challenge (GC1NNJC) cache page.

Happy caching and enjoy the North Jersey Checkpoint Challenge!!!
