Geocache Description:

The above co-ordinates are for the start of a footpath and the lane that leads to the parking. There is nothing hidden at this location. This is a reasonably short multi, taking in some of the sights to the West of Bruton. The route to the cache follows a footpath along the river and railway. For those that prefer a circular walk, there is a return route via Trendle Hill. Park in the Chinese Restaurant car park or on the High Steet (2 Hr limit) or on Lower Backway.

To find the cache, you will have to visit a few sites and find the answers to a couple of questions.

At the start of the footpath, at the base of Tower Hill, look up and to your right and note down the dates on the end of the Bruton Fish Inn

Record this as: 19AB - 19C6

Head up the hill towards the Mill on the Brue Activity Centre.

Go over the style at N 51°06.558 W 002°27.640

and head West towards N 51°06.441 W 002°27.810 where you will find a gate. You will pass an assault course on the way but try and ignore the temptation to have a go.

Go through the gate and head West. (Due to a landslip the path is diverted into a field but rejoins the original path before the next reference point)

Continue West to N 51°06.412 W 002°27.964 where you should find a metal gate.

How many horizontal bars are there on the gate?

This answer will give you D.

Go to the right of the gate (not through) and make your way to
N 51°06.417 W 002°28.000.

You should be standing at the back of a building known as Gant's Mill - how many skylights are there in the roof?

This answer will give you E.

Continue West, passing through a gate in position.

N 51°06.362 W 002°28.124.

You are looking for an electricity pole in position

N 51°06.258 W 002°28.344.

There is a number on this pole. After the letters AB record the next four numbers as: F G 5 8.

The cache is in position N 51°0 B . G A D W 002°2 C . E F B

You are looking for an ammo box hidden very close to the railway line that runs between Bruton and Castle Cary and also close to the route of the now defunct Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway that ran between Bath and Bournmouth - the line closed in 1966. Whilst at the cache site, you should be able to make out where the S&D used to pass over the existing track via a bridge - look for the embankment on the other side of the line. A junction to connect the two railways at this point was planned but never completed.

The cache site may be muddy after rain!

If you want to make this into a circular walk, once you have found the cache head for:

N 51°06.264 W 002°28.587 where you should find a gate, some steps and then a stile. Use all three and then jump over another stile at

N 51°06.270 W 002°28.584

Then up the hill to

N 51°06.489 W 002°28.349 where you will find your last stile

From here, head East along Trendle Lane to N 51°06.618
W 002°27.547 where you will find yourself on the other side of the Chinese Restaurant to where you started.

Allow an hour for the round trip.
