Geocache Description:

The Wild Turkey or the Meleagris gallopavo is one of only two domesticated birds that originated in North America. The Muscovy Duck being the other. The male of the species normally weighs from 11 to 24 pounds with the female being considerably smaller ranging from 6.5 to 12 pounds. Wild turkeys are omnivorous, eating nuts, berries and, occasionally, small vertebrates.

Unlike their domesticated counterparts wild turkeys are can fly fairly well. Their top speed is approximately 45 miles per hour and they are able to maintain level flight for nearly a mile. In the early part of the 20th century wild turkey population in North America dwindeled to only about 30,000. Currently there are more than 5.5 million wild turkeys in North America.

Wild turkey facts:

  • Between 5,000 and 6,000 feathers cover the body of an adult turkey.
  • They have excellent daylight vision but can't see very well at night.
  • Wild turkeys can run at speeds of up to 25 miles per hour.
  • Male turkeys are called toms and females are called hens.
  • Large toms may have wingspans of over four feet.
  • Hens lay a clutch of 10-12 eggs and incubate them for about 28 days.

By now you are probably wondering why I placed a cache with the theme being wild turkeys. The answer is simple. One time, fairly recently, while I was hiking in this area I was fortunate enough to encounter a flock of wild turkeys within a couple of hundred feet of the hiding spot. Perhaps when you are hunting this cache you will be as lucky as I was.

You are looking for a small plastic container. Be careful, have fun, try not to get your feet wet and, as always, please rehide the container as well or better than you found it.
