Skylights On Stevens Creek Trail
Bullit recently archived his nearby Camino Skylights cache and
was kind enough to let me take over this area. No need to check any
vegetation and no need to go upslope for this one. 5/28/09: To
prevent further woodchip slides I'll give a hint: cache is within 4
or 5' of paved trail. Note: The overhead power lines sometimes will
make accurate GPS readings difficult.
To view the skylights, follow the trail into the tunnel, under
the bridge. About half way across the tunnel look up. These
skylights have panes and were installed right into the median on El
Camino Real above. The skylights took nearly a year to complete and
the cost to build this section of the trail was $3.5 million.
During construction builders had to contend with the 204,000 cars
per day passing by on El Camino above as they were not permitted to
close the road. In addition, all of the utility lines running along
El Camino had to be dug up and reburied under the new trail.
Parking is available at nearby stores or at a little lot
adjacent to one of the Stevens Creek trailheads, this one located
at the end of Yuba Drive at N 37 22.939 W122 04.118. Not only is
this section open but yet another extension on the Stevens Creek
(south of El Camino) opened up last week. The trail now goes all
the to Sleeper Avenue. Come check it out!
