The Point Vernon Cemetery was named Polson Cemetery after Charles Polson. Read more about him and about the relocation of his grave to this cemetery on the board. Take note of the year he died.
Then find Polson's grave - either follow the instructions on the board, or go to WP1-The grave (S 25° 15.164 E 152° 48.816). Take note of the year he died listed on the grave stone.
A = the difference between these two years. (Someone’s got their maths wrong...)
Then go to the Monument to the Kanakas at WP2-The monument (S 25° 15.088 E 152° 48.816). This monument was erected in memory of the South Sea Islanders who were 'blackbirded' (captured and sent to Queensland to work the sugar cane plantations and cotton fields). There were an estimated 12 000 kanakas living in the Maryborough-Hervey Bay area. The monument is a reminder today of the tragic role they played in Queensland history.
BC = the number of years the kanakas worked in cotton and sugar cane fields
