How Geocaching Works

Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Geocache Description:

Computers, the Internet, Email, Blogging, Social Networking,
Instant Messaging, e-Commerce...the list of technologies and
computing functions, that we largely take for granted, is endless.
Imagine if all this computing power was suddenly taken away from
us. No more Google, no more Facebook or eBay...worst of all, no
more Geocaching!

The miracle of all this, is that the incredible transformation that computing has had on our lives is supported entirely by the sending, receiving and processing, of endless streams of zeroes and one’s.

I am of course talking about binary numbers. Every character you write in your email, every pixel of a digital image – its all just binary numbers, that your computer has to constantly convert and decode into something that us, mere mortals, can understand.

This cache therefore, is my simple tribute to binary numbers. The coordinates above are not where the cache is located, but where a kissing gate leads to a pleasant walk between Green Lane and Blackcap Road in Appleton, Warrington.

The actual coordinates of the cache are located at the following location – it’s your job to do, what your computer would normally do, and convert the binary numbers to real coordinates.

N 00110101° 00010101.00110000
W 00000010° 00100001.01101001

To be honest, it’s not that hard, and certainly can be solved in a few minutes Googling.

The cache itself is a plastic clip box in a camo bag, containing a pencil, log book and some toys and trinkets for swaps.

STOP PRESS!!

FTF honours go to Qpootle5. I knew I should have made it harder! Then again he is a teacher! My next puzzle cache will have to be more fiendish!
